The Secret Garden is a colourful world full of unique plants which interact with each other and move just like you and I do. Humans often don’t notice their movements and interactions as they live in a silent world with their own form of communication. Many of the plants make their own food by using energy from the sun while also depending on carbon dioxide, water and nutrients from the soil. Some plants feed off other plants, while others are carnivorous. Carnivorous plants are one of the most unusual types of plants because they eat insects and tiny animals. ‘The Secret Garden’ is a true story about carnivorous plants.
Carnivorous plants mostly eat tiny flying and crawling insects. Sometimes they also eat tiny fish or frogs if they live in or near water. Carnivorous plants are bizarre because unlike most plants they actually eat animals which are alive. Perhaps they were bored with their usual food and wanted to try something new?
If that is true, maybe it is time we start being really nice to plants so that they don’t decide to add humans to their diet! Take heart though, the tallest carnivorous plants usually grow up to 12 inches in height. There are a few exceptions that can grow up to 3 feet and none of them are able to eat a whole human being yet.
So why are carnivorous plants so different from their other friends in the plant world? Well, it turns out that carnivorous plants had to fight to survive in poor soil with very few nutrients, and this is why they had to develop strange mechanisms to help them to ingest insects and tiny animals. Usually the soil provides the minerals that plants need. However some special “meat” eating plants have evolved to grow in soil depleted of nutrients.
